Marie Van Brittan Brown was an African-American inventor and the inventor of the home security system (U.S. Patent 3,482,037) in 1966, along with her husband Albert Brown. They jointly applied for the patent, which was granted in that same year of 1969.
The invention was basically the first closed-circuit television security system and is the predecessor to the modern home systems today. It led to the foundation for video monitoring, remote-controlled door locks, push-button alarm triggers, instant messaging to security providers and police, as well as two-way voice communication. The fame of Brownâs device also led to the more prevalent CCTV surveillance in public areas.
